Met Gala 2017: Best Dressed Women

To all of us regular people, the first Monday in May might seem like any other day. However, in the fashion world it is a very different story, seeing it host the biggest event of the year, ‘The Met Gala’, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This is no small affair, with celebrities in their droves clambering to get tickets and show off their own personal nod to an allotted theme, which this year was ‘Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons’. Here we give you the best picks of a very avant-garde selection of stunning outfits….

1. Selena Gomez

Selena’s beautifully whimsical and romantic gown, designed by the brand she represents, Coach, was a very subtle hint to the more understated and vintage inspirations behind Rei Kawakubo’s work.

2. Jennifer Lopez

Valentino is certainly a designer that celebrities gravitate towards for influential nights like the Met Gala and who better to pull off the floating 60s style of this astounding ocean blue dress than the legend that is J-Lo. She also had another great accessory in tow on this particular evening in the form of her new boyfriend Alex Rodriguez.

3. Blake Lively

Blake Lively is never one to go unnoticed on the Met Gala red carpet and this year was no exception. Consequently, she and her collaborative designers at Atelier Versace chose to use blue feathers as their inspirational nod to Rei Kawakubo.

4. Kendall Jenner

Made from 85,000 hand-painted crystals, Kendall Jenner’s ‘barely there’ dress was a masterpiece to behold but not one for the fainthearted, with a huge amount of flesh on show. However, this apparently wasn’t just so Kendall could show off her impressive assets, but actually a gesture towards the theme and Rei Kawakubo’s concept of ‘un-fabric’. Believe it or not, there is actually not a single piece of fabric on this entire dress, designed by Julia Haart, creative director of La Perla.

5. Zendaya

Representing the youth of the Met Gala’s red carpet in the best possible way, 20 year-old Zendaya pulled off this parrot-adorned Dolce & Gabbana masterpiece with the utmost poise and sophistication.

6. Ashley Graham

Playing on Rei Kawakubo’s bold use of colour and silhouettes, Ashley Graham’s dress was designed by the powerhouses at high street store H&M. Her presence on the Met red carpet this year also heralded great applause since she was unable to attend last year because no designer stepped up to dress her curvaceous figure.

7. Reese Witherspoon

We’re not sure we could envisage a more flattering dress than this radiant Thierry Mugler gown worn by the loveable actress Reese Witherspoon. Paired with her Tiffany drop earrings there really is no other word for this look than sublime.

8. Gisele Bündchen

Never known to put a foot wrong on the Met red carpet, former supermodel Gisele showed up in a striking silver Stella McCartney gown, with just enough flesh on show to keep her look classy yet alluring.

9. Lily Rose Depp

Along with the show-stopping colour of this Chanel masterpiece, Lily Rose’s gown also shows a subtle dedication to the fashion house’s founder, Coco Chanel, whose favourite flower was a camellia.

10. Emily Ratajkowski

Although some were shocked at her surprising lack of skin on show (if her track record is anything to go by) we don’t think Emily Ratajkowski could have looked any closer to perfection in her beautifully embellished Marc Jacobs gown.
