Top 10 90s Fashion Icons

When it comes to fashion, it’s safe to say that the 90s – in all their punk and alternative glory – really are having a moment. In fact, they have been having a moment for the past few years and show no signs of disappearing anytime soon. Therefore, we thought it a good idea to put together a list of the most sought-after 90s style pioneers, just in case you are ever short of inspiration:

1. Jennifer Aniston

Probably one of the best-loved television stars of the 90s, Jennifer Aniston is still the ultimate muse for women everywhere. This all began with her laidback yet sophisticated wardrobe (as seen on hit tv-series, Friends) and, of course, her world-renowned ‘Rachel’ haircut.

2. Gwen Stefani

Paving the way for ‘Punk Princesses’ across the globe, Gwen Stefani has been a source of endless fashion inspiration ever since she first appeared on the music scene with her band ‘No Doubt’ in the very early 90s.

3. Kate Moss

One of the most famous supermodels in the world, Kate Moss is just as much of a style icon now as she was back in the 90s when she first entered the scene at the tender age of 14. However, the difference was then that no one had seen anyone like her before and her most successful campaign for Calvin Klein caused something of a fashion revolution.

4. Naomi Campbell

You’d be hard-pressed to find a 90s supermodel with more poise and elegance than Naomi Campbell and her certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ still makes her one of the best-loved in the industry to this day.

5. Drew Barrymore

What’s not to love about Drew Barrymore? Not only was she one of the coolest girls on the planet during the 90s – hanging out with every Hollywood star worth their salt – but she was also something of a rebel, especially when it came to what she wore.

6. Winona Ryder

Speaking of rebels, Winona Ryder turned out to be the ultimate ‘good girl gone bad’ and this was never more apparent than in her leather-adorned 90s outfits.

7. Melissa Joan Hart

On a completely different note, the alternative, punk side of 90s definitely needed a more wholesome ‘girl next door’ type to level out the playing fields and this came in the form of Melissa Joan Hart, best known for hit tv-shows Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

8. Courtney Love

In the weird and wonderful world of fashion, it often helps if you don’t give two hoots about what anyone thinks of you. And our inspiration for this is none other than the ultimate rock chick Courtney Love, who, along with her band ‘Hole’, taught us to wear whatever we want whenever we want.

9. Britney Spears

I don’t think you can get any more of a polar opposite to Courtney Love than Britney Spears but she definitely needs to be on this list because her athletic, tank-top adorned style was very much one of the prime closing acts of the 90s and lead on to much more popularity when the 00s finally arrived.

10. The Spice Girls

We’ve arguably saved the best for last here because I don’t think it’s possible to discuss 90s fashion without including the very different styles of Ginger, Baby, Scary, Sporty and Posh Spice. The ultimate pop-group, these girls certainly had something for everyone and if you were a young girl (or boy!) growing up in this era, the chances are you were obsessed with everything they said, did or wore.
