Top 10 Movies Set in Space

There’s just something about outer space isn’t there? Perhaps it’s the fact that it’s so unimaginably vast. Or even the fact that man has discovered so little of it. Either way, it has been the source of inspiration for a great deal of our favourite movies and here are just a few of our favourites:

1. Star Wars (1977-present)

I think many will agree that when it comes to sci-fi, it really doesn’t get any better than Star Wars. Considered the ultimate movie franchise by millions of fans across the globe, these loveable cult movies are showing no sign of slowing down in terms of success or popularity even though the first was released over forty years ago.

2. Alien (1979)

If horror is more your cup of tea then you will already be aware of Ridley Scott’s epic, Alien. Playing on the classic concept of ‘fear of the unknown’, Scott’s masterpiece sees a crew (lead by Sigourney Weaver) fall under siege by a terrifying extra-terrestrial creature.

3. Star Trek (1979-present)

Even though when it comes to motion pictures Star Wars got in there first, Star Trek already had the legacy of a very successful TV show behind it. And the plight of Captain James T. Kirk and his crew was so popular that it was made in to the first of many movies in 1979.

4. Apollo 13 (1995)

The first of a few very successful space disaster movies on this list, Apollo 13 – starring legendary actor Tom Hanks in his younger years – is made all the more poignant because it is based on the real-life plight of three astronauts and their desperate battle to make it back to earth after an on-board explosion.

5. The Fifth Element (1997)

When it comes to complete and utter surreal escapism, The Fifth Element is the sci-fi movie that ticks all the right buttons. Starring Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich, this quirky blockbuster is set in the 23rd century and sees Willis battling against Gary Oldman to protect the fate of planet earth.

6. Avatar (2009)

Taking director/producer James Cameron fifteen years to bring to life, Avatar is considered his masterpiece in terms of the stunning cinematography and special effects. It’s just a shame that the storyline seems to replicate 1992 animation FernGully in a rather alarming way.

7. Gravity (2013)

Another incredibly tense space disaster movie, Gravity was the recipient of countless awards after its release in 2013. I mean, what could be worse than being trapped in space on your own? Sandra Bullock’s acting is almost too good as you can feel her fear so intensely.

8. Interstellar (2014)

Although I can’t lie and say that I fully understand the plot of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (despite having watched it a few times), there is absolutely no doubt that it is one of the most epic outer space movies ever made.

9. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Taking on an altogether more jovial approach, Guardians of the Galaxy is many people’s favourite Marvel movie because of its loveable mismatch of characters and also perhaps the fact that it stars man of the moment, Chris Pratt.

10. The Martian (2015)

Playing on a similar concept to Gravity, in that it sees one astronaut stranded alone in space, The Martian – starring Matt Damon – takes on an altogether more long-term stance seeing his character Mark Watney attempt survival over the course of 560 days.
